1972 Ford Gran Torino Squire Wagon: Ludicrously Well Sold!

The hammer fell at $47,500 for this 1972 Gran Torino Squire Wagon.

This may be one of the most unique BAT auctions of all time! This 1972 Ford Gran Torino Squire wagon shows just 451 miles—that is 451 original miles! It is powered by a 351ci V8 paired with a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The car was sold new by Covington Motors of Covington, Virginia and was owned by the original owner until its purchase in 2016 by a dealer for his collection. The car includes the original window sticker, several original registration papers showing mileage, factory documents, and a clean Illinois title.

This Torino is a unicorn. I remember seeing lots of these on the road and they are now all long gone. This example is a literal time machine—unused and in the wrapper! The orange color is beyond “period correct”—its perfect. It comes complete with deluxe pleated vinyl upholstery and faux wood grain on the door panels and dashboard. It was optioned with power brakes, A/C, and power tailgate window. It even has the Magic Tailgate that either opens down or to the side.

Assuming the seller bought the car right it was very very well sold. If the seller overpaid to acquire this rare artifact, they were still lucky to see this astounding result. The buyer should either have their head examined or they should be given deity status for acquiring one of the most unique, unremarkable, and original cars on the planet— the Torino is a true piece of American history.

This transaction proves the point that ultra low-mileage highly original cars—no matter what they are—will always command a huge premium. This Torino is a one of a kind asset—the old adage “show me another” strongly applies here. The new owner should take this Torino to Concours de’ Lemons in Monterey next year—it will surely win best in show!
